West Bypass

Clearly many citizens are dissatisfied with how construction of the West Bypass came about.  They question whether the decisions to proceed have been honest, open, or fair.  Too often our officials must be reminded they are elected to serve, not to be served.  As Commissioner, I will vote to halt construction on the West Bypass.  The Commissioners MUST reassess the entire project with input from the citizens before any further funds are allotted, or construction permitted, on any phase of the East or West Bypass.  As Commissioner from Post 1, I will vote to do just that.

TSPLOST

Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax.  Aside from the pros or cons of the transportation bill, we must consider the state of the economy and the ramifications of raising taxes.  We are in the midst of the most severe recession in our lifetimes with no end in sight.  There are a multitude of tax increases just around the corner, from increases under Obamacare to the sunset of the Bush tax cuts.  Additionally, ESPLOST, the local tax funding much of our school system, will expire in 2013 and we must decide whether or not to continue it.  To ask taxpayers for more, at this time, I do not believe is fair or justified.  For this reason I will vote against TSPLOST.

Tough Economic Times

We are living through the worst economic times in our memories.  Americans have tightened their belts.  We have made hard choices.  What we want and what we need are not necessarily the same.  We should expect no less from our elected officials, whether in Washington, Atlanta, or here in Fayette.   As your commissioner, I will work diligently to monitor and streamline our budget.  Shoulder to shoulder, we must work together, sacrifice if necessary, and make Fayette a model for our neighbors.

On November 3rd, vote for Charles W. Oddo, Fayette County Commissioner, District 5 At-Large
